2009:
Wow! The calendar has already flipped to 2009 and I’m still
thinking where did 2008 go! January wasn’t terribly exciting but it
was full. All the Christmas village and lights, in and out, had to come
down and taxes prepared. Special weekly women’s choir rehearsals were
continuing from the fall for a special February program, as well as
regular choir. Attending the Yarnell Community Presbyterian Church up on
the mountain and editing their newsletter were fun along with weekly Ice
Cream Socials here at North Ranch, plus making new friends on occasion.
It was one of the few years since 1990 that I didn’t make it to
Quartzsite but I guess I’m feeling a little Quartzsited out! Sounds
dull but it wasn’t.
On Feb 10, our women’s choir sang our version of songs from
"Sister Act" in nun’s costumes. It was hilarious, lively,
and completely took the congregation by surprise. What fun. I gave a
Power Point program that day about my solo travels around North America. It was impossible to put 20 years of travel into 30 minutes
but they
at least got a glimpse into this amazing adventure I have been blessed
to live since leaving Michigan in 1986.
My Western kids, Janet and Bill, visited in March and we drove up
to see the burros in Oatman, AZ. In between community and church activities and our North Ranch LaFiesta,
I spent a lot of time working on the revision of my RVing Alaska book
which I will tell you about under that book section. The travelers began
to leave for the summer and by August, I needed a break. A friend was
driving to Colorado
to visit his kids so I tagged along and he dropped me off at the
Linnerud-Jarmuth digs in Colorado Springs. I stayed for 2 ½ weeks, enjoying their chaos in between trips to the
Garden of the Gods, the Air Force Academy, and a drive to the top of
Pike’s Peak. I drove a Budget rent-a-truck back to North Ranch with a
lot of their worldly goods in tact. I’m thinking about a new
profession!
October took me to southeastern
Arizona
to celebrate the Carmichael
50th wedding
anniversary with four days of good food, good company, ATVing at the
Cochise Stronghold and visiting the Kartchner Caverns.
Before I knew it, it was
Thanksgiving and Christmas and time to put the lights and village back
up again. I actually did some entertaining of neighbors and friends
while I had everything cleaned up and decorated! Pastor Paul
invited surrounding church members to join our choir this year to sing
the Christmas Cantata. The church was packed to the rafters and it was
great fun having 30 in the choir instead of 12-15.
Now I’m looking forward to doing a Power Point program on Alaska
at the Yarnell Public Library on March 12. By then the new AK book will
be in my hand. And the year rolls around.
It’s different to be in one specific place in an
earth-connected house and office again, but I like it after 20+ years of
solo RVing. Full-time RVing is very addictive so I find myself dreaming
of far-away places with strange-sounding names. I especially miss the
boondocking that landed me beside a rushing mountain stream or next to a
quiet lake with lots of pine trees. And now that my back problems have
become manageable again, I’m planning a major north, east, southeast,
and west trip starting in May this year, visiting family and friends in
WA, MI, and VA and maybe a few in between.
If you aren’t asleep yet, click on the books and I’ll give
you a little preview of each one.
Happy Travels!
